The bike courses for both the long course (56 miles) and the 41.5 course (35.4 miles) follow relatively flat loops going north and south along Lake Superior. After navigating out of Downtown Duluth athletes travel north along the Highway 61 Expressway. Long course athletes will return south in Two Harbors, while 41.5 tri athletes will return south at Homestead Road. On the way back athletes take the Scenic North Shore Highway along Lake Superior. There is road construction happening along the Scenic North Shore Highway this year between the southern start and McQuade road. The City of Duluth is adding new pavement and widening the shoulders along this stretch, which will improve the 2018 event. We have an alternate route this year that cyclists will take if the road construction is not complete. Cyclists will utilize Superior Street for a few miles between Lakewood and London Road on the return. The street was recently paved last year and parallels the Scenic Hwy.
Two aid stations are available on the long bike course at miles 19 and 38, while 41.5 athletes will pass just one aid station at mile 19. Aid stations include a bottle drop, and are stocked with bottled water, Gatorade, and porta potties.
We are currently working on a number of improvements to this year’s swim set up, transition area, and bike course. If successful, changes may be made. Any modifications made will be an improvement upon last year’s set up, from an athlete’s perspective.
