Always use the correct sandwich or plate configuration that is recommended by the machine manufacturer, otherwise you could cause damage to your machine. An embossing mat provides much less pressure on the die and material, and gives it a softer base the press against, preventing the die from cutting through. What to do if you can’t remove the die-cuts Once completed, the cutting mat and material can be ejected from the machine and removed from the mat to prepare the mat for another use. Which die cutting machine should I buy?

Metal cutting plates – this is a type of shim that’s perfect for more intricate dies. Imagine a pair of scissors and the two metal blades coming together for a crisp cut – that’s how this shim works with metal dies! You’ll see a much more defined cut with this plate included in your sandwich. Steel rule dies are stronger and have more cutting force than a thin metal die, so they can cut through more difficult materials (such as mat board or leather) or more layers of material at once (such as multiple layers of fabric for creating quilt pieces). However, it is possible to create much more detailed designs with thin metal dies, and thin metal dies are much more affordable. Thin metal dies are also lightweight and take up less room to store. Manual machinesare more affordable as an initial investment, but the cost of individual dies for them can make them more expensive to use in the long run. Stampers may love a manual die cut machine for the ease of working with the large variety of dies available that match their favorite stamps. Manual die cut machines also have an ability that digital machines don’t – they can also emboss paper and thin metal using plastic embossing folders. Using steel rule dies, manual machines can also easily cut a huge array of materials.

For a machine that will do a little bit of everything, you may consider buying a digital die cut machine. These machines will do most die cutting tasks (except emboss or cut super heavy duty materials), and although not the best machines for the task, they can be portable or cut large volumes of duplicates if needed. Portability Most machines work with material in the range of 12 to 15 inches, though some may have smaller or larger ranges. Make sure your machine is the right size for the projects you intend to work on.

For digital die cut machines, the “dies” are digital files that serve as patterns to tell the machine what to cut. Different machine manufacturers use proprietary file formats for their machines, but many machines can also use widely available SVG files or even import files such as .jpeg files for conversion to use in their software. Manual Die Cut Machines vs. Digital Die Cut Machines Rubber embossing mats – this nifty mat allows you to use dies as embossing tools as it creates a softer impact. Instead of applying enough pressure for the die to cut through the card or paper, it reduces the pressure to result in an embossed image or pattern. You all know how much we love die-cutting, here at Crafter's Companion. It's one of our favourite ways to embellish our papercraft projects, especially because there are so many different die designs available. It's a technique that can be used for absolutely any occasion, any kind of papercraft project, like cardmaking, scrapbooking and home decor, and with a huge variety of materials. When it comes to lifespan, manual machines tend to win this race. On a well-built model, the lever and rollers are unlikely to stop working. Otherwise, the only components to worry about breaking are the dies, and those are replaceable. Then place the sandwich on the machine’s “cutting path” and either turn the crank or turn on the motor to move the sandwich through the machine. When it comes out the other side, disassemble the sandwich and remove your completed beautiful cut! Top Digital Die Cutting MachinesDrawing, piercing, engraving, embossing, and cut-by-color are all extra features that some machines offer. If you know that all you need is a machine that cuts where you tell it to, a straightforward machine without extra features may be the most cost-effective option for you. The Pogi mini heat press machine is the perfect portable machine for all your iron-on DIY printing projects. This adorable mini heat press is compact and lightweight, perfect for all your personalized patterns. The “sandwich” is the combination of the platform of the machine, your chosen material and die, and the cutting mat that keeps the material and die from sliding around as they pass through the rollers.
