Event Overview

The Superior Man Tri is the winner of the 2013, 2014 and 2016 “Triathlete’s Choice Race of the Year!” presented by Minnesota Tri News.

On Sunday, August 27th, 2017, triathletes from around North America will “Escape from the Vista Fleet” into the Bay of Lake Superior.

Drawing athletes of all abilities, for many the Superior Man is their first long distance triathlon. Most athletes that haven’t competed in this race are intimidated by the swim. While you’ll want to be prepared, past participants have found both the jump from the Vista Fleet cruise ship and the swim in Lake Superior to be more manageable than expected. Water temps have averaged in the low to mid 60’s (as a comparison that is warmer than most early season MN Triathlons.)

The 2017 Superior Man Triathlon again features two distances to choose from: long course triathlon (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run) and 41.5 triathlon (.5 mile swim, 35.4 mile bike, 5.6 mile run). The swim starts with boat jump from the Vista Fleet into the Bay of Lake Superior and goes in a rectangular direction. After transitioning, athletes will enjoy fast bike and run courses along the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior. The finish area under the arches of Bayfront Park is set against the beautiful backdrop of Lake Superior and Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge, an ideal setting for our finisher’s celebration.

The Superior Man weekend kicks off with packet pickup on Saturday. Pick up your race packet, drop off your bike, and check out the course before the big race day. Be sure to attend our important athlete meeting at packet pickup.

Race day is an all-day spectacle, beginning in the wee hours of the morning when athletes make their way into transition. When the first athlete crosses the finish line in Bayfront Festival Park, the party begins! Join us in Bayfront Festival Park as athletes, fans, sponsors, and spectators alike gather for a post-race party! Overall and age group winners receive a custom Epicurean cutting board.
