Description

The Godox TT685 is a powerful compact portable TTL compatible Speedlight flashgun, Powered by 4x AA Batteries. A good speedlight is a core component of a photographer’s kit. As one of the more versatile and most heavily used tools in a photographer’s kitbag, it’s essential that you have a quality, reliable and easy to use on-camera flash that you can trust. The biggest advantage though is that the battery easily lasts a wedding. In fact it's still showing full bars on the display. OK so it's summer and I haven't punished the flash a lot since I do prioritise natural light when I can. But this is great! I no longer have to charge up before each wedding. With a built-in receiver and a variety of different modes from HSS to TTL, it is perfect for people who shoot weddings, portraits, events, fashion, sports, fitness & advertising. It is especially good for shooting on location due to the flash being easily portable. High-Quality Images & Colour With that in mind it’s hard to argue that this flash isn’t good value given the feature set and the built in triggers, both slave and master mode.

The Godox tt685s supports manual mode, slave mode, auto flash, and i-TTL II allowing photographers to integrate it into their photography sessions no matter the situation or their needs. Being fully 2.4G compatible the flash is usable by the majority of wireless technologies on the market right now allowing you to integrate your tt685s into a multi-flash setup without issue and use a number of wireless remote control flash triggers with the setup too.

So here's where we use the flash in the real world. In my case to photograph weddings in Nottingham. So far,I've used it at three weddings so I think I've got to know this flash quite well. Well, what can we say? It’s a flash. The Godox TT685 II N has image quality that you wouldn’t be able to tell apart from Nissin, Profoto, Yongnuo, Flashpoint, etc. Flashpoint by Adorama often rebrands Godox lights anyway. If anything, just know that it’s pretty weak still. If you’re using f2.8 zoom lenses, you might find that the Godox TT685 II N outputs too little light. So with that said, you’ll go for exposure compenation or put it in manual mode. If you’ve been using flashes for years though, this is nothing else. At wider apertures, it will do a pretty decent job for sure. Extra Image Samples It has all the same features as the TT685. So it supports TTL and HSS. Using master mode you can control remote slave flashes. You still can't adjust zoom on a remote flash from the LCD. Cheaper - AA batteries are cheaper in the short term, whether these are rechargeable batteries or single use ones. You don’t need to fork out for a spare Li-Ion battery On paper it does absolutely everything I want it to do plus a few things I wish they didn’t (Hello optical mode I mean you!). The hotshoe issue shook my faith a little and it really isn’t the most intuitive flash to start using.

Our new price match policy guarantees you the same price as other retailers so you’re alway getting the best deal possible... When looking at the positives of using each type of battery above, you’ll probably start seeing which model may be more your flavour. However, before you rush off to buy one there are more things to consider! Recycle Time As we have touched on a few times throughout the article now, the design of the tt685s offers some excellent protection against overheating even if you are using flash settings that can potentially generate a ton of heat. There are two main tweaks that Godox has made with the tt685s to do this with the first being increased airflow in the flash unit to maximize heat dissipation and the second being its battery housing as shown in the image above. Now we’ve established what the TT685II has over the original model, let’s have a look at deciding between the two fresnel-headed speedlights. There are a number of differences between the models despite them looking almost identical. Battery

The TT685 TTL Also Has A Zoom Range Of 20-200mm , This Helps You To Focus The Beam Of Light, Acting As A Spotlight Or You Can Expand The Focus Of The Beam Of Light For Widespread Coverage, Allowing You To Add More Creativity To Your Photography. Godox like their competitors have seriously upped their game in terms of the plastics used. Compared against the Nikon SB910, it feels just as solid. I like the simplicity of the on/off switch although it has caught a couple of times when I've put it into my bag and turned itself on. My simple fix is to put them in my bag upside down! The Shanny ever so slightly over exposes the subjects compared to the other two. Whereas the Godox's flash exposure is identical to the SB910. In short the Godox TTL meteringdoes it's job. FLASH POWER OUTPUT The Li-Ion batteries are interchangeable with other Godox flashes (AD100Pro, V1 and V860III for example) One particular thing that we do like on the tt685s is that the on/off switch is an actual physical switch rather than a button. A number of modern flash units have switched over to the button press system where you have to hold them for three or five seconds before the flash will turn off. In our opinion this is annoying and people often think their flash unit is off when it is actually still on due to not holding the buttons long enough. We will always take an actual on/off switch over a button-based system on our flashes but this does come down to personal preference.

As you can see from this burst of 6 shots in Continuous High mode and all the same settings, that the SB910 does a much more consistent job and manages to get the first fourframes albeit the power is dropping in betweeneach frame. The v860 does not fire until it has completely recharged and as a result only 2 out of 6.The connecting joint on the tt685s that attaches the body and head of the flash together offer a full 0-360° horizontal pan with a -7-90° verticle tilt to allow you to easily bounce the flash when needed. Although a few compeating camera flashes on the market in this price range also offer a full 0-360° rotation these days, the majority don’t so it is nice to know that you can fully rotate the Godox tt685s if needed. Additionally, the actual connection joint on the flash unit is solid and does not feel weak or as if you are about to rip the flash in two when adjusting its pan or tilting angles either. Put simply, if you NEED a modelling light, the TT685II isn’t going to be much use to you as it doesn’t have one. The V860III features a 2W LED modelling lamp to help with pre-visualisation and is also adjustable in intensity. A modelling lamp is probably a feature more suited to a beginner and may not be something that a seasoned photographer will worry about if it’s missing. Conclusion This is the Speedlite that both amateur and professional photographers have been waiting for, for a long time. The ultimate portable on-location flash strobe Speedlight, ideal for shooting weddings, portraits, events, fashion, sports, fitness & advertising. It can be used as an on-camera flash, as an on-camera master to trigger other off-camera flashes, and as a slave flash off-camera. Now you know how I got here, it's time to actually start talking about the Godox TT685 itself. BUILD QUALITY BasicallyI've got a very eclectic range of equipment none of which talk to each other. What a pain! I've made it work for me but it's far from ideal.I briefly flirted with the idea of getting the Ving 860's and standardising on the FT16 triggers but what stopped me was having to use the little clip on FT-16S receivers. I was bound to lose them and in effect they were external receivers albeit small ones. Plus the FT16's use the 433Mhz frequency and many people have complained as a result the range was poor. In recent years Godox have started making a name for themselves as a provider of top quality and dependable photography lighting that users don't have to break the bank to own. In terms of speedlights, the Godox V1 is their top-priced model on-camera flash featuring a round head that provides soft natural lighting effects. In addition to this, Godox are on their third iteration of the exceptionally popular VING series with the V860III - effectively a Godox V1 but fitted with a fresnel head. At first glance the new TT685II could easily be mistaken for the V860III, however there are a number of differences that we’ll cover in this blog that will help you decide which of these is better suited to you. Out with the old, and in with the TT685IIFor some of the more advanced functionality of the flash, you’ll definitely need to read the manual. I’ve played around with it by randomly pressing some of the other buttons, and I got lost a couple of times. Quality Using the flash for basic on-camera/off-camera TTL and manual mode firing is all pretty straightforward. You can easily cycle between modes, vary the intensity of the flash in manual mode, change groups and channels without having to work too much out. The result has meant that I've been turning up to weddings with 4x YN560's, 3x TTL flashes (Nikon SB-910, Shanny SN600SN & Pixel X800N). Since I also use a Godox AD-360 flash for when I need more power I've also had in my bag the Ft-16trigger.
