But, it’s not a spoiler to say that at least through “How the Light Gets In” Peter doesn’t murder anyone. I don’t think he’s going to murder anyone (though I don’t have a crystal ball, hahahaha) – I think if he were, it would have been his father or Julia, and those ships have sailed.

There are many suspects, as the Finney/Morrow family is a seething cauldron of resentment, hostility, dysfunction, and possibly even insanity, hidden under a polite veneer. Their animosity towards each other, and their disconnection from people who do not belong in their social circles is like a madness, caused often in abused people, especially children. It’s not often a fiction publication can tie into breaking headline news, let alone one of the top news stories of the decade. The whole “Gamache as a Burgher of Calais” moment is to remind the reader that Gamache is Canadian Jesus. There are other moral lessons to had, too, of course; the dangers of greed, envy, jealousy, and being judgmental are also pounded into the reader’s head.Julia in particular is dreading it, and during an illicit smoke outside one evening, she confides to Gamache that her family makes her miserable.

I suppose if my family still had money, we'd behave pretty much exactly like the Morrows, and I mean exactly, down to every detail of the action. The character of Bean himself draws attention to him/herself only to disappoint readers that he/she was of no particular significance other than proving a philosophical point and a roof top ending. It's quite possible in my American edition, those words have been changed (although we use icing as well).

While it ends with sorrow and sadness, the final item is revealed when the Pandora's box is opened at last. As the Morrows begin to suspect one another, as every family member seems to have motive – most likely the need for money – the Gamaches head to Three Pines to celebrate both Canada Day and their wedding anniversary, July 1. There is no more hunting and fishing, birds are fed in the winter, mice are even caught alive and released.
