Description

On their first reunion, one of the participants, Isobel Hall, died when caught in the rising tide while crossing the causeway.

Once the interviews with the suspects lessen, the story picks up briskly, with many unexpected reveals, twists and turns, and a big shock near the end.Cleeves takes the time to introduce us to each of the friends and the death doesn’t occur for several chapters. The obvious suspects are the reunion participants followed by Rick's supervisors, co-workers, acquaintances, and so on. The Rising Tide is published in the UK by Pan Macmillan: the hardback was published on 1st September 2022 (ISBN: 978-1-5098-8961-7), and the paperback on 16th March 2023 (978-1-5098-8965-5). Relationships made 50 years ago have come and gone, like the tide, but the nucleus of their friendship remains the same.

So begins a case that seems at first to be slowly progressing as Vera and her team try to figure out if this is a crime that stems from the last or present. Every five years, these former school mates meet for a reunion on Holy Island, a small piece of land that becomes a literal island at high tide. Absolute kudos goes to Ann Cleeves who after so many years of writing still manages to produce something that feels fresh and is immersive and compelling for readers to get their teeth into. A group of local sixth formers and their trendy young teacher first visited the island 50 years ago. After a quick review of the scene and much to her delight, Vera is sure that it’s a murder and not a suicide.

Selbst, wenn Veras Mitarbeiter den Verdacht hegen, dass die Chefin bereits wüsste, wer der Täter ist, mag der Leser noch völlig falsch liegen. A group of friends have been meeting every five years on Holy Island (Lindisfarne) since their initial, school organised trip, as teenagers. A thought that is shared by a member of Vera’s team, Holly, who is trying to decide where her life is going.

Raven Black was shortlisted for the Martin Beck award for best translated crime novel in Sweden in 200. Although the story is written with multiple points of view, it is Annie, the organizer and mainstay, who is the principal of the secondary characters and the one with the greatest depth of character—“The years, stretching ahead of her, seemed empty, devoid of light or fun. Now a second member of this small group, journalist Rick Keisail has hung himself in his room on the reunion weekend. The suspects, now mostly in their sixties, are a mixed bunch, with a range of professions including teacher, a priest an ex-model turned life coach and yoga teacher and the owner of a nearby holiday resort, all at a comfortable stage of life where murdering a friend seems unlikely. She is tenacious, intuitive, although a little too careless of her own safety as she follows leads in this most challenging and tragic of investigations.Daniel Rede is Annie's former husband, now a wealthy developer of exclusive holiday resorts on the island. Fifty years ago, a group of teenagers spent a weekend on Holy Island, forging a bond that has lasted a lifetime.

Who doesn’t love ‘large and shabby’ Vera Stanhope, the blunt detective in Ann Cleeves’s Northumberland police procedurals? The core group, now in their mid to late 60s, reconvene on Holy Island for their latest gathering with each member assuming their expected and traditional role. The island is atmospheric backdrop for the story with its ruins and religious history, landscape and wildlife and the shifting tides that make the causeway so dangerous to those who don’t pay attention to the them, and plays a very central and tragic part of the novel. The island is linked to the mainland by a causeway that floods twice a day – the rising tide of the title that plays a key role in the action.
