For the first time ever, blueprints of the scenes and settings from all eight Harry Potter films have been collected into a stunning volume. With the finalization of my interpretation of Rowling’s footprint, I began looking through the books to find the information I would need.

Between those and photos of the real thing at Alnwick Castle, I think my results are pretty accurate. This has been up on YouTube for a bit but I’ll include it here in case you’re crazy enough to not have already subscribed there. GabeWillard -- I'm terrible at math so I wouldn't begin to muster a guess, and I don't know the scale from canon or J. In any case, my model omits the door on the other tower and attempts to include as much detail on the neighboring walls as can be divined from the available reference.

But either way, I don’t think I ever would have started this thing without some floor plans to guide me. My goal is to help readers visualize locations in the books in a new way, giving them even more to imagine and explore. I shifted my way attention to the adjacent walls that correspond to the cathedral’s nave and north aisle, otherwise known at Hogwarts as the Long Gallery. This is the project’s first render with the OptiX denoiser, which wasn’t compatible with my GPU till Blender 2. Jody wrote Insight Editions' "Vault" series: "Harry Potter: The Character Vault," "Harry Potter: The Creature Vault," "Magical Places from the Harry Potter Films," and "Harry Potter: The Artifact Vault.Whew, sorry for the long delay…the months of sitting at my home desk have taken their toll on my arms, and I’ve had to significantly limit my computer use. And “focus” is indeed the right word, because I’ve spent a lot of time just staring at reference images and…thinking. For the record, the boathouse steps themselves are actually a great design, beautifully executed in all three incarnations. The odd tapering crop is the result of perspective correction, since the original photo was taken at an angle. Spanning 287 extra-large pages — at 10” x 13”, it’s larger than many laptops — this book features over 350 technical drawings from the sets of the Harry Potter movies, including the iconic locations and even some intricately-designed props.

To make matters worse, in the live-action location shots that follow, the statue (which I believe was installed just for the film) has moved to a different corner of the structure. The Hogwarts founders may have been able to wave their wands to build the castle we all know and love, but Muggles wishing to build a replica have to put in a whole lot more work. There's a very simple explanation for this: Hogwarts in its entirety is a 13-story Scottish castle from the 11th century. But ultimately, there’s a real beauty in all these drawings, even if I always find myself wanting more. For Disney's live-action films, she co-authored "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Pirate's Guidelines" and "Treasure Planet: A Voyage of Discovery. I have seen plenty of angles of it, but what I would like is some sort of official layout or blueprint of the whole shebang. Before we get into today’s post, I was asked to share a plan view of the original quad in my model, so…voila! The second film contains a particularly dramatic example: there are two establishing shots that use similar or identical plates of the castle miniature, but the surrounding terrain is totally different.
