At the end of each voyage, some cards and most loot tokens also have an “anchor” power that activates. But the game puts a lot of potential thought behind the very simple decisions that it asks you to make. The fact that it provides a satisfying voyage of strategy alongside all of that is nothing short of a brilliant newly christened ship ready to set sail. It’s a fun game with so much variety in the combinations of the characters and loot, that every game plays out differently.

At the start of Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest, one player shuffles their deck of forty crew cards and draws six at random. It’s a simple elegant system that not only solves potential hiccups but serves as a solid way to reinforce the game’s strategic potential. This progressive asymmetry becomes more and more pronounced with each round as you never play all your cards during a round. If you like Mission: Red Planet, Broom Service, and other hand-management games, we think you will enjoy sneakily managing your crew in Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest! It survived more than a few of my purges, including the Great Board Game Dump of 2017, where so much of my cardboard went to a better place.

One thing Paolo Mori worked on improving for this release was the two-player game, which was somewhat bland in Libertalia.

Since the collection of the loot goes from the highest numbered card to the lowest, if there’s something you really want, you’ll want to play a higher card.

Chris played epic games of Monopoly every Saturday night as a child long before he dove into the deeper end of the hobby. At two, I found that I needed more clarification around what happens to certain cards with the fixed pseudo-third-player overlay and they weren’t necessarily in the rule book.Given that Martin reported the same happening in Norway and both Switzerland and Norway are not EU members it does seem like something is not right in Spiral Galaxy’s setup for non-EU countries in Europe. The reputation track tidies up the slightly clunky ranking system and gives an excellent catch-up mechanism which I’m a fan of (as discussed here! As a publisher of such massively popular games as Wingspan, Viticulture and Scythe there is always an air of expectation around any of their releases.
