Estranged from all of her family, blaming Grace for what has happened to her, it seems ironic that she suddenly reappears in all their lives. Ruth Jones is, of course, a great storyteller, and she has pulled it off again with this tale of four generations of Welsh women. We follow Elin as she struggles with her marriage, and Becca as she discovers love for the first time. The time she looses her cool is with her academic mum which she is the opposite like the rest of the family it seems.

Sosuke Natsukawa's international bestseller, translated from Japanese by Louise Heal Kawai, is a story for those for whom books are so much more than words on paper. Her daughter, Alys reluctantly moves in with her but escapes to London as soon as she turned eighteen. I often find it hard to keep up with multigenerational novels and each chapter written from someone else’s perspective but the transitions in this were pretty seamless and the humour was just right. The 2019 Christmas Day special of Gavin and Stacey gained national critical acclaim, drawing an audience of over 18 million, winning a BAFTA for TV moment of the year and a National Television Award for Impact.

Thank you to NetGalley, Random House and the author Ruth Jones for the opportunity to review this wonderful book. When I started the book, I wasn’t that sure about the characters as Grace is easy to understand and love, however, the same can’t be said for her granddaughter, beautifully portrayed as a Head Teacher, following in her grandfather’s footsteps, whereas her daughter hates school and the tension between the two is palpable. Her 16 year old daughter Beca is about to fail her GCSE’s, her husband has started behaving strangely and her grandmother is secretly trying to track down Elin’s mother Alys before she turns 90, so the scene is set for some spectacular secrets to be revealed. Female characters that cross over many generations always makes for a great read, and in this novel from Ruth Jones, her latest that is no exception.

Also found the colloquial grammer used whenever characters spoke irritating, ie the way all the gs were dropped - "nothin" "pickin" etc. I particularly liked the dynamic Soozi, Beca’s friend, a talented singer who says what she thinks, usually accompanied by swearing. I fell in love with Grace, Elin, Beca (and Soozi) straight away, but it did take me a long time to warm to Alys.P'haps because I'm Welsh myself I can identify with her characters and the use of certain colloquialisms.

But when a brutal killing takes place on their very doorstep, the Thursday Murder Club find themselves in the middle of their first live case. WENDY, their eldest, a cause for concern, soothes herself with drink after being widowed young, while VIOLET, lawyer-turned-stay-at-home-mother, is disturbed by the reappearance of a son placed for adoption fifteen years earlier. She exudes warmth and wisdom, and reading this book makes you feel someone’s draped a warm overcoat across your shoulders. Any mother or daughter will identify with many of the situations in this book and be encouraged by the final denouement. The reader is given windows into the thoughts and experience of each woman, but some of their secrets are only revealed later in the plot. LIZA, a professor, is pregnant with a baby she's not sure she wants by a man she's not sure she loves and GRACE, their dawdling youngest daughter, lives a lie that no one in her family suspects.
