But it is in her nonfiction that she has more visibly reckoned with loss, whether it is Truth and Beauty, her memoir of her friendship with the late poet Lucy Grealy, or the pieces in her 2013 essay collection, This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage, about being a caregiver to her grandmother.

Almost from the moment we finished that first practice, she identified it as part of her recovery, the thing she needed to stay alive. The beloved New York Times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays.

The months she’d lost not being in chemo while they struggled to locate the new tumor had put her perilously behind.Where you imagination allows you to truly believe in what you’re reading, even though you know it isn’t true. The world asks us to engage, and for the most part we can, but given the choice we’d rather stay home. This is not a very good guideline for anyone who enjoys this kind of collection, and sure what do I know?

Yet I found myself ignoring the missteps, the saccharine detours, because they stem from the same impulse that enables the more engaging passages: the wish to let the heart “remain open to everyone, everyone, all the time”. Psilocybin produces substantial and sustained decreases in depression and anxiety in patients with life-threatening cancer . Karl found a giant bright-blue tarp in the garage and Sooki spread it over the floor and table downstairs, setting herself up to paint. In the twenty-six years that Karl and I had been together, I’d never had the experience of coming home to dinner being made. You may be surprised to hear my favorite issues center not on her writing experience but on complex family relationships, as she does in "The Nightstand" and "Two More Things I Want to Say About My Father.

Once I’m there for chemo, I will find a place where I won’t be worried about being a good houseguest. I read this essay today, previously published in Harper’s magazine about Ann Patchett’s friendship with Tom Hank’s assistant, Sooki Raphael. Ann Patchett talks about one of my favorite books of hers and certainly one of my favorite book covers, The Dutch House.

I had signed up for a farm-share box, and every week we were overwhelmed with pounds of mysterious vegetables. I kept up with a great number of people, and I didn’t know to what extent I’d told Sooki’s story to Karl before, and if I had told him, I didn’t know whether he’d been listening, but now I had his full attention. Tavia is one of Ann’s best friends and her lifeline and she’s just my kind of friend as she remembers half while Ann remembers the other half! But if you love eloquence and wisdom, and listening to a voice of an author that quickly becomes a dear friend, then I give the audiobook my highest recommendation. Living a life of love and generosity of spirit, paying attention to the small moments, and putting people and relationships above all else sounds like meaningless platitudes but in this book we see them in action.
