Description

I then met Roger Maine, who was teaching there part-time, and I bought a camera, and I think it must have been a really cheap camera—a Praktica.

We’ve all had that tremendous, visceral feeling of sitting in a theater, watching a movie, and it’s just so damn beautiful – and I don’t mean pretty – we cannot breathe. For almost a century, American Cinematographer has been the magazine of record for motion-picture professionals all over the world. It was a matter of circumstance—and free time in his demanding schedule—that led to the publishing of Byways, a monograph that compiles his black and white images from as early as 1971.Renowned for his collaborations with some of the most distinguished directors of our time, Deakins has, over the years, bestowed his unique vision on such celebrated titles as The Shawshank Redemption , Fargo , A Beautiful Mind , Skyfall , Blade Runner 2049 , and 1917 . Byways started as something specific and became more about things I have observed throughout my life.

It’s in Weston-super-Mare and she’s sort of looking at a poster that’s on the other side of the frame. The individual images on their pages have no captions or explanation, although there is a list of locations and dates in the back of the book, in an index. Byways is the kind of book I find myself picking up almost absentmindedly when I have some time and want to go exploring. Byways" is the first monograph on the photographic work of iconic Oscar-winning cinematographer Sir Roger A.It includes previously unpublished black-and-white photographs spanning five decades, from 1971 to the present. The Oscar-winning cinematographer discusses his passion for capturing stills, the inspiration behind his photographic work, and the joy of exploration and observation that has spanned more than five decades.

Speaking to Chris Cotonou, Sir Roger Deakins shares his thoughts on the correlation of film and still photography, and selects a few of his favourite images from Byways.A brand new copy of this highly-anticipated new publication additionally SIGNED in ink by Sir Roger on a bookplate specially designed by Team Deakins for the occasion. Here, Chris Cotonou goes behind-the-scenes in the making of the film's car chase segment in which he arguably topped The French Connection. I have spent almost half a century enjoying my life as a cinematographer, during which time I have photographed both documentaries and something like seventy feature films. Both types of moments ask me to appreciate the people in the image, the settings in the images, and the ability of a still photograph to be evocative.

The great photographers have dedicated their lives to taking still images and I’m not known for that, so for a publisher, I think it was a step in the dark.
