About this deal

My nonfiction books 'Paranormal Warwickshire', 'Illustrated Tales of Warwickshire' and 'A-Z of Warwick' are published by Amberley Publishing.

Thanks for not shirking the reports of the incomprehensible attitude of some Australians towards the Aboriginal people, counterbalanced with the accurate recount of the warmth good nature and hospitality of most citizens. I doubt Bryson would top anyone's list of people to be stuck in a lift with, and yet you can't help hanging on his every word and ascribing it the status of the gospel truth. Bryson dishes out praise and derision in roughly equal measure, so that he comes across as neither overly effusive or curmudgeonly, but it often both, sometimes within the space of a sentence or two. Nevertheless, as with all his books, It is well worth reading and I can confidently say that you will enjoy the journey and will come home knowing a lot more about this fascinating Country's interesting features . Having visited several of the Australian locations in this book – Sydney, Canberra, Alice Springs, Uluru, Darwin, and the Great Barrier Reef, among several others – I loved reading about Bill Bryson’s experiences there in his brilliant piece of travel writing, Down Under.

Bryson's books seem so simple - solipsistic narrator, quick tour of country, lots of anecdotes, dash of humour, a few all-embracing conclusions - that some reviewers dismiss the skill with which they are put together. The Lost Continent (1989) was a rite of passage: when his father died it prompted him to discover the continent lost with his youth. The people are cheerful, extrovert, quick-witted and unfailingly obliging: their cities are safe and clean and nearly always built on water; the food is excellent; the beer is cold and the sun nearly always shines. Accessoirement je vous dirais bien de lire ce roman de Cordwainer Smith : " NORSTRILIA " qui traite de l'Australie . Terence Blacker, in the Sunday Times, was more temperate, but still dismissed the book as a hack job: "For someone about to visit Australia, Down Under presents a perfect, accessible introduction to the country, its history and its people. Ignoring such dangers and yet curiously obsessed by them Bill Bryson journeyed to Australia and promptly fell in love with the country. This is, after all, a man who sits through the capital's promotional tourist video, Canberra - It's Got It All! It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. These are Bryson's two best books because they sprang from a powerful sense of identity that gave them a shape. What I enjoy most is the feeling he gives the reader of moving in close to a subject, examining its quirkiest or most singular aspect, then panning out again to take a more distant or panoramic view.
