H. Holmes and Richard Chase were not included (especially with the inclusion of some other lesser known murderers with very short entries), but otherwise a very informative edition that also includes entries on different types of serial murder as well as definitions of various terms and FBI agents that are referenced throughout. Similarly, the Atlanta murders of 1979–81 include only 2 killings for which Wayne Williams was convicted and criminal profiler John E. The first volume featuring the most infamous killers throughout history—from Afghanistan’s Abdullah Shah to Kazakh cannibal Nikolai Dzhumagaliev. The W orld Encyclopedia of Serial Killers is the most comprehensive set of its kind in the history of true crime publishing.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this murder-opedia is that it feels like it has a British focus, so there is more detail on European and English murderers, like Fred West, who was apprehended and charged in 1994, apparently when this text was authored. It's missing a number of serial killers (especially from other countries but that's to be expected) but overall I'm extremely pleased with this book. Written in a non-sensational manner, this comprehensive encyclopedia debunks many of the myths surrounding this most notorious of criminal.

The author's stated purpose is to "demystify, as far as possible, those predators in human form who have been with us since the dawn of history. It's a pretty long read but it does contain some written material that might be inappropiate for some readers. Serial killers seem to capture our interest more than many other types of criminals and this is an excellent collection of information on the most prolific killers in recent (and not so recent) history. A perpetuação da ideia de serial killers serem seres que beiram a incarnação de demônios da terra, anula totalmente a complexidade de suas mentes e assim, anula a abertura de um debate mais profundo focado em como um serial killer é criado, e mais importante, como sua criação pode ser evitada.
