Finally, here was an acknowledgement, a mea culpa , yet simultaneously also a morbid, almost pathetic celebration of what Hollywood once was. I needed to finally dive into this after listening to You Must Remember this a few years ago and hearing all of the true stories behind Angers’ tabloid stories.

Trust my hairdresser that Kenneth Angers is laughing all the way to the bank as he'd believe these nice immigrant boys who harmlessly ran movie studios to bring joy to the public and employ Jayne Mansfield's prehistoric boob job. Some stories are amusing, some pathetic, some disgusting, some sad, but every single one grabbed my attention. Alexander Pantages came from Athens, Greece and made fortune during Klondike gold strike and owned vaudeville houses and about 60 theaters. Actor John Bowers who lost all his money when he invested in a failed flying school, he became penniless and depressed. This book is a second volume with the same title and fills in the material not covered in the first book and additional info about less-known stars.

I read this so I could appreciate the new season Karina Longworth’s podcast: You Must Remember This.

S. edition of Hollywood Babylon was published in 1965 by Associated Professional Services of Phoenix, Arizona. Previous owner's name penned to inside front cover, sticker to inside rear cover and date penned to REP. I love books about the golden age of Hollywood and gossip about the stars but in my mind there are far better books out there than this. En Hollywood Babilonia el autor se encarga de ofrecernos una visión más aguda de ese mundo desconocido a través de un despliegue morboso de los más jugosos rumores de las estrellas de comienzos del siglo XX.It probably helps to know the broader history of Hollywood to better appreciate some of the references made in this book. Un Novella 2000 sotto acidi scritto da uno dei più importanti registi underground del cinema statunitense. This is TRULY FUCKING AMAZING and naturally being prone to interest in scandal and hearsay, I was salivating over how these long dead, "America's sweetheart" "deus ex machina" stars of the old Hollywood had such fucked up, mysterious and Lynchian lives, both in front of and behind the curtains of the film industry. It's hard to tell what's bogus here and what's not, like, there's absolutely no way "Rosebud" refers to Marion Davies' clit, but that bit about Bill Tilden making a cameo in "Lolita" is incredible.

Bound in publisher's original plain brown wraps with photo-illustrated dust jacket, profusely photo-illustrated.Anger's in-depth knowledge, catty cynicism and gallows humor make this book and its predecessor both addictive guilty pleasures. It seemed to be somewhat of a voyeuristic look into the dreams and ambitions of vibrant people who fall into these seedy alley nightmares of Hollywood Babylon. In sum, the book is no longer the "luscious plum of sizzling scandal" it once was, and Anger's tabloid naughtiness has dated badly. Other debunked urban legends started by the book include claims that impoverished film star Marie Prevost's body was partially eaten by her dachshund after she died in her Hollywood apartment in 1937, and that Jayne Mansfield was decapitated in her fatal 1967 car accident.

The book details alleged scandals of Hollywood stars from the silent era through to the 1960s, including Charles Chaplin, Lupe Vélez, Mary Nolan, Rudolph Valentino, Marie Prevost, Mary Astor, Wallace Reid, Olive Thomas, Jeanne Eagels, Thelma Todd, Errol Flynn, Frances Farmer, Juanita Hansen, Mae Murray, Alma Rubens, John Gilbert, Barbara La Marr, Ramon Novarro, Jean Harlow, Carole Landis, Lana Turner, Judy Garland, and Marilyn Monroe. There's a difference: the 1965 version is packaged like that of a sleaze-gossip rag in 95 cent paperback form, versus the 1975 edition, which was published again after the ban was lifted, Anger having cleaned up some of his facts, embellished some of the fluidity and structure of the book, and laid out higher quality images into a "coffee table" hardcover format. On the eve of his death, he had attended a gay party in Malibu, and his gay friends accused him of dating women for publicity purposes.Describes a book or dust jacket that has the complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title, etc. Charles Boyer's tragic end, when I first read of it in Jeanne Basinger's 'The Star Machine', left me near tears, frankly. Salacious volume of Hollywood calumny, lovingly assembled by one of underground cinema's self-styled bad boys, and notable for its complete lack of compassion.
