About this deal

Every single glistening drop of bow spray can be seen as it comes pouring over the submarine's surface, caught by a camera strapped to the conning tower. A teletype machine reports the news that the "humanitarian mission" has been an example of better cooperation between the West and the Soviet Union. On December 21, 1968, Renata Adler reviewed the film for The New York Times: "a fairly tight, exciting, Saturday night adventure story that suddenly goes all muddy in its crises. Attempts to discover further clues to the identity of the Antagonist, dealing with further Allies and Enemies as they meet them. Ice Station Zebra is a 1968 American espionage thriller film directed by John Sturges and starring Rock Hudson, Patrick McGoohan, Ernest Borgnine, and Jim Brown.

On board is Dr Carpenter, a mysterious Englishman, who is tasked with discovering what exactly occurred at the station. The film's climax involves a superpower confrontation between Soviet paratroopers and the US Marines at Ice Station Zebra itself, but concludes on a much more ambiguous note than the novel, reflecting the perceived thaw in the Cold War following the Cuban Missile Crisis. What really got me was the kind of details that the immense, curving Cinerama screen was able to offer. After mainy failed attempts by the Britain, the US and surprisingly even Russia, to locate the station, finally a special crew aboard a very special vessel, submarine USS Dolphin, is commissioned. In June 1967, Laurence Harvey and Patrick McGoohan joined the cast as the Russian agent and British agent, respectively. I initially picked out this book because I like reading about polar expeditions, both real and imagined. War Is Hell, but It Pays Off for MacLean: War Pays Off for MacLean War Pays Off for MacLean War is Hell, but It Pays Off for Alistair".

The escalating production costs of this film, along with the poorly-received The Shoes of the Fisherman at the same time, led to the transfer of MGM President Robert O'Brien to chairman of the board, though he resigned that position in early 1969, after both films were released and failed to recoup their costs.Else, very good+ condition in very good dust jacket that has some edgewear at spine ends and light discoloration bottom of spine and next to it rear. In 2006 the National Reconnaissance Office declassified information stating that "an individual formerly possessing CORONA access was the technical adviser to the movie" and admitted "the resemblance of the loss of the DISCOVERER II capsule, and its probable recovery by the Soviets" on Spitsbergen Island, to the book by Alistair MacLean. Things get even trickier when Carpenter shares Ice Station Zebra’s real purpose and the fact that he suspects foul play. The novel was later very loosely adapted into the 1968 John Sturges film of the same name starring Rock Hudson. There is precious little time for reflection or character development, not when there are Reds to outwit and icy tundras to cross.
