By exploring the lives of the 100 villagers, children will discover that life in other nations is often very different from their own. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. By shrinking the planet down to a village of just 100 people, children will discover how to grow up global and establish their own place in the world village. Designed with kids in mind, this book does it all - relatable illustrations, captions, text features, and more.

It is important to be thoughtful about how the data are presented because sometimes key messages can be missed out because of the way the data are shown. This book is a remarkable and beautiful book that helps to bring world politics, economics and cultural diversity within the understanding of young people. There is a lot of text and numbers involved so I would not go into full detail with younger children but with older children you could do a lot with this book. The visitors can be children from their own class, other classes from within the school, parents, members of staff, governors . Its hard to picture so many people at one time-but what if we imagine the whole world as a village of just 100 people?

Western audiences tend to pay attention to focus points, while Eastern people consider the background. This book (an updated version to reflect the current population) would be great to teach a variety of skills in social studies and math. Highly recommended for older children interested in world geography, If the World Were a Village would also be a perfect teaching/learning tool in both elementary and middle school social studies classes (and well, perhaps even in high school classes, as the numerical information presented would of course be of interest and significance to and for older students and adults as well). The 2nd Edition of the best-selling book which has sold over 400 000 copies in 17 languages — updated with new content and insights about the world’s people. The more we can understand one another, the more we can come together and fix problems that affect people worldwide.

Granfield alternates concise histories of the Lower East Side, early immigration to America, and Ellis Island, with short chapters on four of the families who made 97 Orchard Street their home. But I’m doubtful this book itself will spark readers’ curiosity in the world and people around them: it simply isn’t engaging or emotionally affecting enough.Smith's If the World Were a Village truly is, I believe, one of the best books I have encountered to teach global awareness to children. For a lot of children it might be hard to imagine the vast amount of people that populate the world. Smith's text, providing a fitting complement, a wonderful and richly evocative mirror to and of the information presented. Maybe some kind of narrative spine would have been more effective at pulling readers in and exposing them to new worlds. billion, but now already 7 billion people – Smith describes the book as being about “world-mindedness,” which explores the lives of people from various cultures around the world and their ways of life.
