About this deal

Indeed, it may be that the Tench incident is an act by those determined to destroy the democratic condition of the Glitter Band. There were several questionable narrative choices, but it seems I've become inured to them or maybe it was my mood. Machine Vendetta begins with Prefect Ingvar Tench taking an unscheduled journey to Transtromer, a minor habitat where she is killed by a mob.

The Prefects are the cops of the Glitter Band, the ring of artificial environments orbiting a planet in the Epsilon Eridani solar system. How Alastair Reynolds creates not only a galaxy but a complex and multi prong plot that satisfies completely is beyond me! I met my wife in the Netherlands through a mutual interest in climbing and we married back in Wales. From the king of modern space opera comes a new adventure in the Prefect Dreyfus series— Machine Vendetta is a thrilling tale of deadly conspiracies and old enemies that refuse to die. Reynolds has the science fiction magic that allows him to create whole universes and even make a potentially ridiculous situation, such as a planet of babified adults seem real.A sequel to Elysium Fire, it is the eighth novel set in the Revelation Space universe, and the third in the A Prefect Dreyfus Emergency spinoff series. Reynolds has perfected a clipped style of moving stories forward at a fast pace, but that also means that characterization comes through more through action than introspection.

Also Judge Dredd like, in that these are slightly more militaristic police units, but with an appreciation of the law, unlike the Judges. Every chapter reveals another layer to the far-reaching mystery, all the while building to a stunning crescendo in which characters old and new band together to face a long-dreaded scenario. Clarke Award; Revelation Space, Absolution Gap, Diamond Dogs, and Century Rain were shortlisted for the British Science Fiction Award, and Chasm City won the British Science Fiction Award.Panoply is a small, efficient police force, dedicated to maintaining the rule of democracy among the ten thousand disparate city-states orbiting the planet Yellowstone. I can't recommend this more highly, and though the story line here is essentially a new one there is enough essential background from the previous novels to make it worthwhile for new readers to start at the beginning of the series. You could read the book as a standalone, but a lot of the characters overlap from previous stories, so you'd be better advised to go in sequence. There is big trouble in the Glitter Band, the ten thousand habitats of which are patrolled by a force of only a thousand prefects of the Panoply. This is solid British SF adventure, evoking echoes of le Carre and Sayers with a liberal dash of Doctor Who.
