About this deal

The only way of preventing this is to provide ventilation. The warm air, containing the water vapour, will rise and circulate around the room until it finds a cooler surface, unless we let that air out and some cooler air in. If the problem is diagnosed as penetrating damp then you will need to look at damp proofing before you try to treat symptoms such as efflorescence and mould. Use a Hygrometer to show you the actual Relative Humidity level in the room. If you are not able to measure the RH it makes getting the right balance between heating and ventilation difficult to achieve. You need to close windows and vents when you are running your dehumidifier, otherwise you will be trying to dehumidify the world. This should be done before you attempt to redecorate, as simply washing off the mould with detergent and then redecorating will not kill the spores and the mould is likely to regrow, even through anti-condensation paint.

Keep in mind that in some circumstances cavity wall insulation can be the cause of damp, but this tends to be rare. See our advice on penetrating damp for more details. Unfortunately, if you do have condensation between windowpanes, you will have to replace the glass units. This may or may not be possible depending on the type, age and manufacturer of the original window. 3. Replace the Window Many believe that all damp at low level must be rising damp, but this is often a myth not true at all. In fact rising damp is actually extremely rare and in most cases it’s either penetrating damp or indeed condensation. Clean and dry the area and then tape a square of aluminium foil over a test patch, about 30cm (1 foot) square should do it, and use Gaffer tape not Sellotape. Using a dehumidifier is an efficient way of removing moisture from the room if you are suffering severe condensation problems.Condensation can cause significant damage to paintwork, wallpaper and especially plasterwork and plaster board.

Being a bit of a tinkerer and already owning a few patents himself, he came up with his own reliable heating system to prevent condensation on windows: T-STRIPE. Sash windows were designed to allow for the bottom and top to be opened that would draw air in and out providing effective ventilation. We explain damp being caused by wall ties more thoroughly in our Damp in Cavity Walls DIY and information project.Condensation between the panes of your double-glazed windows usually means the sealant around the two panes is deteriorating. If you think the salting might be caused by penetrating damp then you need to find out for sure what is causing the damp. You can visit our Diagnosing Damp Project or you can consult a structural engineer. Inside the window: As stated earlier, condensation is a sign of high humidity. So if it appears on the inside of your windows, your indoor air is a little too humid. That’s when you need to think about getting one of the condensation absorbers listed above. Now, condensation in and of itself might not seem harmful, but it’s definitely a cause for concern. For instance, if there’s too much moisture on your windows, the water can slide down and soak up into the wooden frames, causing them to rot on the inside. In addition, both mildew and mold can grow if there’s enough moisture on your windows.

Read on to find out what causes condensation, how to get rid of it – in both the long and short term – and what to do if you have a serious condensation problem. Once the room is thoroughly dried out you can then just use ventilation to keep condensation at bay. I have Condensation but I don’t want to leave my Window open

How to improve ventilation to reduce condensation

Where a larger amount of air is involved, mist or fog will arise. If this happens to air that is rising in the atmosphere, and therefore expanding, then clouds will form. Heating and insulationThe frequent rises and drops in temperature caused by central heating being switched on and off contribute to condensation forming. This is further exacerbated in a home with poor insulation because the temperature difference is more dramatic. Also, the colder a surface is, the more likely it is that condensation will form on it. Improving insulation adds overall warmth to a home and prevents extreme temperature changes. It also helps to keep surfaces warmer. So, cavity wall insulation, for example, stops cold spots on walls. And loft insulation prevents the ceiling from being cold. Cooking, boiling pans and using the kettle create a lot of steam in a kitchen. As do activities such as washing up, clothes washing and using a tumble dryer. Opening windows wide whilst doing these activities will provide ventilation and allow the warm air to escape rather than cause condensation on the window. This is unsightly and damaging to your interior decoration, but it can be extremely harmful to your health too. People who are sensitive to irritation, such as asthmatics, can be adversely affected by the airborne spores, so removing the mould is a must! Try washing musty smelling soft furnishings in the washing machine with some white vinegar added to the usual detergent
