When well-fed (0-30% Hunger), the Orange Boy will start producing some items at a specific rate, most commonly a pile of Poop. At 50% Happiness and beyond, it may produce the Chitin Chunk. At 80% Happiness and beyond, there is a 30% chance it will lay the Strange Egg, which can be deconstructed for materials or used to hatch another Orange Boy. Fiona Noble, "Indigo Donut by Patrice Lawrence review – gripping urban teen fiction", The Guardian, 11 July 2017. Sixteen-year-old Marlon has made his mum a promise - he'll never follow his big brother, Andre, down the wrong path. So far, it's been easy, but when a date ends in tragedy, Marlon finds himself hunted. They're after the mysterious Mr Orange, and they're going to use Marlon to get to him. Marlon's out of choices - can he become the person he never wanted to be, to protect everyone he loves?

The story follows, Marlon, a young man whose brother was involved in street gangs until an accident several years ago changed everything. Marlon promised his mum he'd stay in school and avoid his brother's old life, but when old feuds reemerge and his family and friends are threatened, it's not quite so easy to keep his promise. Not cool enough, not clever enough, not street enough for anyone to notice me. I was the kid people looked straight through. NOT ANY MORE. NOT SINCE MR ORANGE. Sixteen-year-old Marlon has made his mum a promise - he'll never follow his big brother, Andre, down the wrong path. Marlon's out of choices - can he become the person he never wanted to be, to protect everyone he loves? I enjoyed Marlon's voice for the most part of Orangeboy - it felt authentic and representative of a modern-day teenager growing up in North London, with enough slang and considered syntax to make him sound real. Some of this fell away towards the end of the novel, but overall it was good. Fruits: Pomegrenade and Raptor Bane. (NOTE: The Mutated Pomegrenade and the Mutated Raptor Bane are also Pet Food type 3 but are deemed risky and unreliable as the Mutated Pomegrenade explodes on impact when dropped and the Mutated Raptor Bane splatters on impact when dropped)

Alex O'Connell, "CHILDREN’S BOOK OF THE WEEK | Review: Indigo Donut by Patrice Lawrence", The Times, 22 July 2017. Longlisted for the UKLA 2018 Book Award | Winner of the YA Book Prize 2017 | Winner of Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2017, Older Fiction category | Shortlisted for Best Crime Novel for Young Adults, CrimeFest Gala Awards 2017 | Shortlisted for the Costa Book Awards, Children's Book category, 2016 In the Urban Dictionary, Orange Boy is an insult used to offend someone who goes against a cause they used to stand by - the story of Milo as he ventures away from the boy he used to be to the man he must become to survive is perilous, and full of pitfalls that tiptoe along the line of morality. When family ties are stretched thin, right and wrong is a blurred, inconstant dichotomy. As the story hurtles towards its conclusion, the tangled lives of the brothers screech to an end that doesn't allow anyone off easily, it's a truthful and powerful story that is much needed in the UK YA scene.
