Things have changed a great deal in OUTLANDER fandom in recent years, with many new fans discovering the books as a result of the STARZ TV series.

And secondarily, it was the other half of the marketing claims: that this continues James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans. Instead Nathaniel is imprisoned and finds himself in imminent danger of being hanged as an American spy. This book is a rather juvenile attempt at being real historical fiction that gets tangled up in its Mary Sue's ripped bodice.

And she meets a man different from any she has ever encountered — a white man dressed like a Native American, tall and lean and unsettling in his blunt honesty.

I wake up wanting you and go to sleep wanting you,” Nathaniel murmured, pulling her shoulders up to him so that her head fell back and the arch of her neck rose to meet him. Outlander’ dealt with Claire’s time-travelling mishap and determination to get back to 1940’s England, as well as Scottish clan politics, and the lead up to Culloden.

My favorite book was the second one, which took place in Scotland and in which several of my favorite characters in the series were introduced: Luke and Jennet. Nathaniel’s heroine is Elizabeth Middleton – a 29 year old spinster who never thought she would find love in the wilderness, let alone with an adopted Mohawk.Elizabeth was a wonderful protagonist; she is hot-headed, stubborn and entranced by the Mohawk way of life. Then there is the fact that I know any slow scenes of domesticated bliss will be short-lived for Jamie and Claire, and when they are idle at Lallybroch I am constantly on-edge for the next disaster. The reader isn't privy to their conversation because we already know what happened to Elizabeth, but wouldn't it be more interesting if we found out at the same time Nathaniel did? Legends of the Fall (1994) might be the closest we ever get to seeing the prototypical “frontiers couple” on-screen.

In contrast; in Diana Gabaldon’s books I am never totally easy with domestic scenes – whether they be on the mountain or Lallybroch.Epic in scope, each book weighing in at around 900 pages, this series weaves a tapestry of fact and fiction, sweeping us into another time and place, all of it beginning with a forbidden affair between an unconventional Englishwoman and an American frontiersman.
