The reader isn't privy to their conversation because we already know what happened to Elizabeth, but wouldn't it be more interesting if we found out at the same time Nathaniel did? Legends of the Fall (1994) might be the closest we ever get to seeing the prototypical “frontiers couple” on-screen.
